2009 ABS Joshua Roth New Talent Contest
Peter Tea of San Jose, CA Best New Bonsai Talent of 2009

By Harold Johnson
Competition Coordinator

The Joshua Roth New Talent Bonsai Competition, for those participating in bonsai for less than ten years and traditionally held at an

American Bonsai Society Learning Symposium, was held at the 2009 Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention in Riverside, California.

The daylong design and styling session began at8:00 am and continued until 5:00 pm. Convention participants watched as the competitors initially viewed the untrained junipers and returned several times during the day to watch the final design take shape. The seven competition finalists pruned and wired to create their vision of the bonsai within the plant. No repotting takes place during the competition so the trees and the artist’s skill are judged only by the wiring and pruning to create the design. It wasn’t meant to be a competition between the two coasts of the U.S. but five competitors make their homes on the west coast two on the east coast.

The eventual winner, Peter Tea, at work during the competition.

2008 John Naka Design Award

By Seiji Shiba

In March of 2007, I entered the 2007 American Bonsai Society John Naka Design Award with a California Juniper, Juniperus californica, named ‘Infinity’ by the photographer, John Edwards, because it resembled the symbol Infinity (Figure 1). I was pleased to be informed that it was the 2nd place winner. With this encouragement, the following year, I entered a photo of another California Juniper, Juniperus californica, named ‘Dancing Girl’ (Figure 2) and was elated to learn that it was the winner of the 2008 American Bonsai Society John Naka Design Award and was asked to write an article for the ABS Journal.

New Talent Contest Winner

By Harold Johnson Jr.,

Thanks to the movies, the “Joshua Roth New Bonsai Talent of 2008” winner discovered bonsai. Seeing bonsai on the screen so fascinated Vladimir Foursa that he began experimenting with material he collected. His first “bonsai” was a Schillings holly which received so much of his attention that he says he worked it to death. Fortunately Vlad met Mary Miller, who urged him to join a bonsai club and accelerate his learning. He not only joined “a” club, he eventually joined two clubs plus two study groups: the Lighthouse Bonsai Society of Boca Raton, Florida; Gold Coast Society, Plantations, Florida; the Chichiki Gawa study group of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and the Asago study group of

Jupiter, Florida.
