Northern White Cedar

Postby mboatman » Jul 03, 2011 7:42 pm

Hi, i want to know everyones opinion of northern white cedars. I know that they are difficult to pinch UNLESS you know how. I am still learning but am getting better. I started to pinch my collected cedar pictured below, and discovered that it backbuds profusely on newer wood but if i am not mistaken, there were maybe a couple of buds pop out on just pass 2 year old wood(i have read that they dont commonly do so)

MItch,

NIce looking tree and it will look even better as the foliage fills in. There is an excellent article on Pinching this tree in the articles "essentials" section of the ABS website that you might want to check out. Your right, they don't bud back on older wood freely but they will occasionally. Here's the link to the Article.

That is an excellent article. Reiner's is good, too. I took a workshop under Marty S on these at Bill V's last September session.

If it survives down here, I'll probably have the southernmost living Thuja occidentalis. It gets pretty hot here, though. I have its pot wrapped in foil to reflect as much heat as possible, and so far it is sprouting some nice new growth. I've pinched it back, and it has shown lots of new growth. (Bringing it inside to be photographed, I see that it has LOTS of new growth. As a result, the photos are a bit messy looking. I don't think I'll pinch much again until just before fall, though because of summer heat stress.
