This bonsai was grown from a stump that was collected in 1993.

Very nice tree indeed!!!! It's so nice to see this tree being actively used for Bonsai. I would love to see this tree in the spring when it flowers and would emplore you to post it when it does. It would be a fine addition to the ABS Reference image gallery. I have often thought of making a forest planting of this material to reflect the way it growes in natural groves. Again! very nice.

Thanks Randy, I appreciate the positive feedback.

The biggest drawback to using this particular species for bonsai is that it is a borer magnet. All the dead wood on this bonsai is the result of borers. For years I battled them with limited success. These stealthy little invaders claimed at least eight other Chickasaw plums over the years and nearly finished this tree off on several occasions.

It wasn't until the systemic insecticide Merit came along that I was able to keep the borer bandits in check. The use of Merit has enabled me to develop a couple of decent trees using this species.

Flowering has been somewhat spotty with this particular tree over the years. However, there appears to be a fair number of flower buds on the tree this year and I would be happy to take a few photos when the tree is in bloom.

I am located in Northeast Florida in USDA growing zone 9A.

Hey Gang,

Just thought I'd post some work that Im doing with some cickasaw plum. This tree was just a bare trunk at the beginning of this season and it has just grown like a weed. They really respond to water and food and reward you with lots of growth. They do need to be pinched pretty frequently too to keep the growth in check. This particular tree is going to be a shohin "slanting broom". A rather odd combination of styles but it should show off the flowers quite nicely. The tree just for reference is 10 inches from the soil to the top of the tree and it will be shortened this winter when it gets wired and spread out a bit. I'm also working on putting together a forest and have trees in the ground that are in training right now and will be lifted and put into containers next spring. I'm rather excited about putting together a natural looking forest. They certainly are pretty around here when they flower in the spring.
