timing for air layering?

Postby michaelt » Mar 11, 2013 11:09 am

Specifically, I have a mume on which I wish to air layer a branch. Leaves on the branch have opened, but haven't hardened off yet. Is this a good time to air layer?
Generally, on deciduous trees, what is best time to air layer? Before tree breaks dormancy? As buds begin to swell? As buds begin to open? As young leaves open? After leaves have hardened off?
Thanks for any information.

I've just been told air layers should be done from spring to early summer. Basically during the most active growing season. Hopefully by summer then you have enough roots and can remove the branch and get it situated in a pot well before fall comes. Some trees might take longer and you have to wait until the following spring. Other than that I don't have many specifics. It's something I would like to try to do sometime. Good luck!
