Very nice. I did'nt realize this was a species of grape until I looked up the species name. Very interesting, almost shiny bark on the trunk.

Thanks Matt, I appreciate the positive feedback.

This variety of grape is quite common here in Northeast Florida. It grows all over the place. It has smaller leaves than most grapes, fruits reliably, can produce some nice autumn color, and seems to thrive in a bonsai pot.

Being a vine, you have to take what the plant will give you in regards to styling.

This is my first attempt at growing one as a bonsai.

This particular one was collected by a friend of mine in 2006. He has been growing this particular species for a number of years and gave me the collected stump in 2007 to see what I could do with it.

Paul

Paul,

I have added an entry for Vitis rotundifolia onto the ABS list of North American plants used for Bonsai. If you get the chance to snap a picture of the tree when it's in leaf and send it to me at my direct E-mail address (plantmanky@yahoo.com) I would like to add it to the ABS library of Reference images as well. If you would also send me the full size image of the tree while it's dormant I'll also add it to the Reference library.

ta ta for now,
Randy Davis

Nice plant, Paul! The fruits are thick-skinned and tasty. I once had some goats who stood around waiting for each grape to fall; they ate them like candy.

Thanks for the complement ross.

All the critters around here like the grapes too. Especially the racoons.

I learned my lesson the first time I let this one set fruit. As soon as the grapes were ripe, the racoons came and pulled it off the bench, breaking a nice pots in the process. As a result, I do not let it set fruit anymore.

Paul
