Does anyone know what this is?

Postby jpaulhamus » Jul 22, 2012 2:34 pm

Hey everyone, I was given this tree/shrub at a greenhouse of a local flower shop. They did not know what it was and I can't seem to find anyone else who does. Below is a close up pic. They said it was hardy (I'm in zone 6a). It has thorns and when I got it back in like April it had some little orange berries on it, about the same size as a cotoneaster's. The biggest leaves are 1 inch or a tad bigger, with a slightly serrated edge. The bark is gray with a slight dotted texture. I was thinking a firethorn but I was told the leaves don't look right. Any ideas?

I would guess pyracantha too, by the photo. Either it's the photo or the leaves are pretty yellow, and may green up with some iron. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Yeah that's still what I'm thinking, just wasn't totally sure. Most of the ones I've seen have narrower leaves that are more rounded at the tip. These are more football shaped. I did do a google search for firethorn leaves and I did see a few pics with leaves that looked like these. If anyone thinks it may be something else please let me know. Yeah the color seems a little off in the photo, they are a tad more green in person. It's been a brutally hot summer here so that could have something to do with it too. Thanks!

It's most likely one of the many cultivars of Pyracantha coccinea and it does infact need some food!!!!!!! A very nice bonsai subject indeed. The berries will vary from almost peach to brilliant red or orange depending on the particular cultivar that you have.

Thanks again for the response. Yeah I figured there had to be different ones and that the leaves varied some. This one has orange berries. Well I feed every other week with Schultz 10 15 10 plant food mixed at half strength during the growing season. I know it needs to be repotted too, it's still in the nursery pot, so that would probably spruce it up some too. Thanks again for helping me out.

Looks to me like it's probably a Pyracantha.
