This is a call to all ABS members that love growing Deciduous trees that display fall colors. Now is the time to start getting ready with your cameras to take that one special picture of your best diciduous tree in fall color display for 2010 and share it with the General Membership of ABS.

Below is a Trident maple from 2005 to get you in the mood.

Sadly, we don't get bright displays of colors here in Louisiana. Things just seem to turn brownish orange and fall off. I'll keep an eye on anything which might hint of Fall and post it here.

Hey Gang,

Here's the first of the year! This is a Trident Maple in the early phases of training. It was put together in February 2010 and already at the end of 1 summer it's progressing nicely! I just love the RED RED RED!!!!!

Here is a bit of fall color for your viewing pleasure.

This particular Red Maple (Acer rubrum trilobum) decided to put on a show for me this year.

That's a lovely tree. I've found A. rubrum to be a very difficult bonsai.

I wonder though if a little less branch off to the right might be worth considering???

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the feedback very much.

The change you have suggested is something worth considering.

Yes, Red Maple is not the easiest species of tree to adapt to bonsai culture. I have been working with a few of the local sub-species here in my area and have found a couple that seem to respond very well to life in a bonsai pot.

I haven't done a red (swamp) maple lately. All around here have huge leaves. There was a subspecies in N. Florida with small leaves. I had a mame clump/stump that was coming nicely, but it didn't like the move to more northern climes.

That's to bad about your maple Jim, I think it would have developed into a nice bonsai.

Your right to stay away from those large leaf varieties, they are extremely hard to tame.

Cheers,
Paul

All,

Another year has almost come and gone. Here is my simple little forest this year. It still needs some more development but it is getting better with each passing year. Next year it should have a nice pot!
